THE FABULOUS
50'S, SARANAC LAKE 2007 WINTER CARNIVAL
The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, to be held between
February 2nd and February 11th, is the longest running
event of its kind in the Eastern United States.
It will be celebrating its 110th year in 2007. Begun
as a one-day event to break the monotony of the
long Adirondack winter, the Carnival has grown into
a ten-day festival that includes sporting activities,
dances, dramatic and musical productions, two parades
(one especially for children) and two sets of fireworks
above the world famous Ice Palace. In spite of the
many changes, the Carnival has retained the warmth,
charm and camaraderie of a family and community
celebration, replete with reunions of friends and
families.
| The celebration
will begin with the Coronation of the
King and Queen of the Winter Carnival, local
citizens who have been selected for their
substantial contributions to the good of the
community through their volunteer work. Joining
them are a Prince and a Princess (elected
at the two local colleges) and a Court of
Royal Lads and Lassies (elected at the local
high school). Completing
the royalty are six pages (selected
at the local elementary schools) and a |

Chamberlain and Archbishop,
who tend to such things sas proclamations and the
crowning of the royal couple. The first official
duty of the newly-crowned "royals" will
be to mingle with the "common folk" at
a Royalty Reception following the coronation. This
will be held at the Waterhole #3 on Main Street
and is sponsored by the Women's Civic Chamber.

Plans for the
2007 Winter Carnival began the day after
the conclusion of the 2006 Carnival, with
the Winter Carnival Committee, a small group
of dedicated volunteers, critiquing the event
and setting in motion the plans for the coming
year. A theme is chosen for each year, broad
enough to give free rein to fertile imaginations,
yet specific enough to provide a focus for
snow sculptures, marching units, parade costumes
and decorations. |
Themes in the past have
included "Hurray for the Holidays",
"Music in the Mountains", "Surfin'
the Century", "Magical Memories",
"All American City", "Boogie Down
Broadway", "Do the Locomotion",
"United in the Mountains", "Mardi
Gras" and, last year, "The Roaring '20's".
The 2007 theme is "The Fabulous '50's".
