SARANAC LAKE
WINTER CARNIVAL PRESS RELEASES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: February 5, 2007
"Dead Pan"
Winter Carnival 2007 at the Hotel Saranac
Date: February 3 & 9, 2007 (special locals night
on February 8.)
Cocktails (cash bar): 5:27 p.m.
Performance: 6:02 p.m.
INFO at 800-937-0211.
The hotel manager get's whacked with a frying pan
and he is dead --- way dead, causing the improv
group that rehearses there to start acting up.
"Dead Pan" takes place at the Hotel Saranac
in Saranac Lake, NY on February 3 and 9, 2006, during
Winter Carnival. The night of mystery starts with
cash bar at 5:27 p.m. and the performance begins
at 6:02 p.m. and it is up to the audience to figure
out who is who, what is what and the name of the
murderer. There will also be a 'locals night' performance
on February 8, with a light fair dinner.
When the creative sorts of the group and the working
sort of the hotel staff start pointing fingers at
each other --- there are less tips than a land lock
canoe. Or something like that.
The manager was demanding of everyone, but himself.
While stealing away have his evening gin and cigarette
someone found him and left him dead on the loading
dock, with an indentation on the back of his head
that matched a skillet filled with burnt eggs. To
say the eggs and the manager's head were scrambled
for the last time is an understatement.
On a normal day -- one when the a staff member isn't
killed on the location -- the workers don't get
along, now there are like barracudas and piranhas
on fish fry night in Trouts Lake. They are testy
with each other, and vicious with the improv group
that rehearses at the Hotel Sarasoda.
Though the hotel hancho won't be missed, it still
is a crime and someone has to solve the mystery.
That someone will likely be the audience who will
be called to duty to interview the suspects and
figure out who has the big swing -- when it comes
to a frying pan.
"Dead Pan" is a play in which the audience
attempts solves the crime. Each of the two performances
will have a different ending and the guileful sleuths
have a chance to win prizes for their deductions.
There will be two performances of this entertaining
whodunit at the The Hotel Saranac on February 3
& 9, beginning at 5:27 p.m. with a cash bar
and the performance begins at 6:02 p.m. (dinner
at 7:03 p.m.)
The special 'locals' Night' performance takes place
on Thursday, February 8, 2007, with a lighter menu
fare. The performances price for Thursday will be
reduced and includes a Deli Buffet; cashbar at 5:27
p.m., performance at 6:02 p.m.; and the buffet begins
at 7:03 p.m.
"Dead Pan" is filled with Adirondack humor.
Best of all there is a seasoned cast that audiences
have enjoyed from the previous six Winter Carnival
Mysteries! Highlighting the night of intrigue and
interviews are Jessica Letson, Lucky Cerutti, Robin
Cerutti, Chris Fransen, Doug Fransen and Kelly Wight.
The script is written by George DeChant.
Ticket and accommodation information is available
by calling the Hotel Saranac AAA Rated Hotel at

since it began its first year of academic operation.

Society for Women Educators.
She has served on the Boards of both the Village
of Saranac Lake and the Town of Harrietstown and
was the first woman elected to the Harrietstown
Board. Dr. Rice has served on numerous state and
local organizations including the Governor's Statewide
Task Force for Economic Development, the Adirondack
Economic Development Corporation Board, the Adirondack
North Country Association Board, the Blue Line
Council, the Saranac River Commission, the High
Peaks Hospice Board as chair of fundraising, the
Franklin County Board for the Aging, the Rotary
Club and others too numerous to mention.
Among her many awards and commendations are a
Certificate of Appreciation from the Adirondack
Correctional Facility, the George Hodson Award
for outstanding service to NCCC, the Business
and Professional Women's Club "Woman of the
Year", and she was selected in 2004 to ORDA's
Hall of Fame.
Dr. Rice has two children, Suzanne - married to
Clyde Baker, and Barbara - married to Chad McCarthy.
She has two grandchildren, Cal McCarthy Rice -
a member of this years Winter Carnival Court and
Sam Baker.
Dr. Rice represents the fifth of seven generations
of Saranac Lake residents. She is thankful that
fate has conspired to allow her to live virtually
all of her adult life in the community in which
she grew up. She feels privileged to have been
surrounded by a caring and supportive family and
community. She enjoys small-town life and is proud
to have adopted North Country values of independence
and hard work. That independence, coupled with
a genuine concern for the well-being of ones neighbors,
makes this area truly unique.
Archbishop, John Van Anden
John Van Anden was born in White Plains, N.Y.
on June 24, 1954. He is a graduate of Bronxville
High School and Babson College. John remembers
waiting in line on the side of Route 30 to enter
Fish Creek for family vacations. In 1969 John
attended Camp Forestcraft on Upper Saranac Lake
and was a camper and counselor for many years.
He enjoyed the Adirondacks during all seasons
and is pleased to be an "Adirondack 46er".
While at Babson, John met his future wife, Buffy,
a Wellesley College graduate. After College they
were married and lived in New York City where
John worked for a C.P.A. firm until late 1980
when the Van Anden's moved to Saranac Lake. In
1986 they purchased the Lakeview Deli and continue
to own the business today. John is an active board
member of the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.
He and Buffy have two children; Katy, age 22 and
John, age 20, both now in college. Buffy's mother,
Gloria Perkins recently moved here from Del Mar,
California and happily resides at Will Rogers.
Winter Carnival is one of John's favorite times
of year when Saranac Lake residents and guests
gather together and celebrate the historic traditions
of our Village. "In my business I get to
see so many kids, now grown, returning to Saranac
Lake with their families, giving them a glimpse
of what true community spirit is like. If I'm
lucky I can usually remember how they liked their
sub or sandwiches made, as well."
John would like to thank the Winter Carnival Court
for asking him to be this year's Archbishop. He
applauds the Winter Carnival Committee for all
their hard work and keeping this tradition alive,
the I.P.W.U. for their imagination and endless
labor on the Ice Palace, the Saranac Lake Area
Chamber of Commerce and local merchants for creating
an atmosphere so inviting to customers and guests,
and especially to the thousands of young and old
who brave the cold to enjoy our winter celebration.
The world can offer some pretty incredible experiences
but only in Saranac Lake can you enjoy the warmest-spirited
community in usually the coldest spot in the nation!
