Introducing the 2008 Winter Carnival King & Queen
William "Bub" McGrain & Janet Simkins |
Grand Marshall, Timothy P. Burpoe, CF
 |
Timothy P. Burpoe was born in Yonkers, New York the son of Marion (Fennell) Burpoe and the late Eugene F. Burpoe. Tim is one of seven children, four brothers and three sisters (he’s the fifth of seven and the reason he is so well adjusted and sociable). He gained Boy Scouts highest rank of Eagle Scout as a 16 year old, and graduated from Charles E. Gorton High School. |
From high school he attended and graduated from Paul Smiths College of Arts & Science with an A.A.S in Forest Technology/Survey Option. He roamed the southwest of the United States for three years working in Utah as a Seasonal Forester/Firefighter, surveyor for a uranium mine, Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. He then found himself back in the northeast and Syracuse, NY where he graduated from the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry with a B.S. in Resource Management. In Syracuse he met the love of his life, Sue Cherny and they eventually moved to Saranac Lake after Tim was offered a job with the NYS Division of Equalization & Assessment as a Forest Appraiser. Sue has been a Resource Room/ Consulting Teacher in Tupper Lake High School for the past 21 years.
Tim has worked as a forester in the Adirondacks for the past 21 years and is a Certified Forester and managing partner with Timberland Assets & Management, LLC. of Saranac Lake. He was elected a Franklin County Legislator for District 7, representing the Towns of Harrietstown and Franklin, and the Village of Saranac Lake, in 2005. He was re-elected to his second term in November and sworn in on January 3, 2008.
He is married to Sue, of Syracuse, and they share three sons, Joseph (18), Steven (16) and Michael (13).
Mr. Burpoe has been active in the community as a member of the Village of Saranac Lake Planning Board, Town of Harrietstown Board of Assessment Review, Troop 12 Boy Scout Committee, President of the Friends of Mt. Pisgah, and coach of numerous youth baseball, football and lacrosse teams. He has chaired the Franklin County Economic Development & Planning Committee for the past three years and is a member of the Finance and Public Safety Committees, and is an appointed representative to the Franklin County Bicentennial Committee.
Tim loves Saranac Lake and Adirondacks. He can’t think of a better place to raise his three sons. The experiences that he has had, “walking the Adirondacks” is material that could fill a book and, along with his wife, are what has made him who he is today. Humbled and honored would be an understatement of his feelings for being chosen as Grand Marshall of the 2008 Winter Carnival.
Archbishop, Dermott Morgan
 |
Dermott was born in Saranac Lake. The youngest of 11 children, he was raised on left-over table scraps and hand-me-down clothes. He is a proud native of Saranac Lake. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served 4 years honorably. Later on he received an associates degree from North Country Community College, a Bachelors degree from Cortland State and a Masters degree from Potsdam State. |
Through his travels, Dermott was lucky enough to meet the woman of his dreams, his wife Elizabeth. They have been blessed with two wonderful children, Haleigh and Dermott Jr. . Dermott and his family moved back to Saranac Lake and he has been working in the School District as a teacher and coach for the past 13 years. Elizabeth and he are also partners with his sister Casey and brother Terry as owners of Morgans 11 on the beautiful Saranac River in downtown Saranac Lake! His fondest memories of Winter Carnival were his senior year as a member of the Winter Carnival Court. It was that year in 1984 that his mother, Sheila Morgan, was voted Queen of the Winter Carnival. Dermott is humbled to again be part of the royal family. He wants to thank everyone involved for allowing him to be part of the 2008 Winter Carnival.
Chamberlain, Carol Reyell
 |
Carol cannot say she is a native Saranac Laker, but she did move here in sixth grade, so she considers herself an “almost.” One of her fondest high school memories is being on the Winter Carnival Court, and she is excited to be part of the royal family again, and would like to thank this year’s court for the fun she knows she’s going to have. After graduating from SUNY Potsdam, Carol returned to her hometown and has been teaching at the Saranac Lake Middle School ever since. |
She is married to Jeff Reyell, whom she met in that same sixth grade classroom, and they have two special kids, Kurt and Lisa, who make their lives sparkle. Some of Carol’s favorite pastimes are family dinners, reading on the beach at camp, and getting together whenever she can with good friends. And although this year’s winter carnival theme is “Hooray for Hollywood,” Carol would much prefer to say, “Hooray for Saranac Lake” because she wouldn’t trade her hometown for Hollywood for a second!
