The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival includes a variety
of sporting events of both a traditional and non-
traditional variety. What's your specialty? Cross-country
skiing? Snowshoe racing? How about throwing a frying
pan? Or maybe its softball played on snowshoes.
Ever played volleyball in two feet of snow (and
no, the court is not cleared off prior to the tournament)?
What about a low-key four-mile run - when it just
might be 10 degrees below zero.
The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival offers all of these
and a few more.
The Mt. Pisgah Ski Area is host to innertube races
and more traditional downhill ski races. Dewey Mountain
hosts both cross-country ski and snowshoe races.
Both of these have classes for children and adults.
Depending on the weather, a series of skating races
for children will be either outside (preferably)
or inside the Saranac Lake Civic Center. A local
restaurant will sponsor the Ladies Fry Pan toss
- complete with the 10-inch cast iron frying pan.
For those who prefer to watch the sporting events,
there will be a woodsmen's (and ladies) exhibition
put on be the Paul Smith's Lumberjacks team and
a demonstration of curling (on natural ice - none
of this wimpy groomed rink ice for these folks).
And last, but certainly not least, a rugby game an
opportunity for both blood and snow what could
be more thrilling?
