Sun Catcher Contest

SARANAC LAKE – The Suncatcher Contest is Back for Winter Carnival- new this year - workshops to help you build a suncatcher.

Local business owner Diane Miller of Prescription Sewing invites the public to participate in a “Suncatcher” display of artistic talent for the Winter Carnival 2024 event. A call to action now to plan and make a SUNCATCHER before February 2nd, 2024 to be considered for the “People's Choice Award” and bragging rights for the one with the most votes. All ages are encouraged to participate. A goal has been set to reach 60 entries this year so please help us reach that goal!

Suncatchers are simple to make from things in your own kitchen. Allowing for creativity, anything can be added to individualize your entry. We ask that items used are not something to become trash as they melt. (ie. No paper, plastics, glass, metals etc.). It is an easy process of making a large colorful ice cube in a cake pan. Suncatcher themes can be creating colorful lines in ice with food coloring, a theme such as nature, winter, “Uniquely Saranac Lake etc. A size limit of 12” round or square is necessary due to considering weight for hanging. All entries will receive a number and zip ties will be provided for hanging.

This year we will have 2 workshops held at the Saranac Lake Free Library to demonstrate helpful tips for making suncatchers. Danielle Roddy of Heartwood Studios, the 2003 winner, will also be demonstrating her special artistic technique.

Workshops will be:

Wednesday January 10, 2024  from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and

Wednesday January 17, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A video link of how to make a Suncatcher will be posted at saranaclakewintercarnival.com. Participants will be asked to register their entries in advance through the winter carnival website and deliver their Sun Catcher to the area to the right of the Palace near the boat launch on February 2, 2024 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. or Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and Noon. We ask that you register at least a week in advance if you plan to participate so we can prepare enough space for hanging all entries. The top three vote winners will be announced on February 13, 2024.

Suncatcher Display Registration Form can be obtained at the following registration link - email to psewing4u@gmail.com

The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee, known also as the Society for Promotion of Winter Carnival, Saranac Lake, Inc., is a not-for-profit 501(c)(4) organization of volunteers dedicated to planning and presenting an annual mid-winter festival. This 10-day, communitywide event traces its roots to a one-day Winter Carnival held in 1897 by the Pontiac Club. The Carnival honors its heritage every year by building an Ice Palace from blocks of ice harvested from Lake Flower’s Pontiac Bay, where carnival events have been traditionally held for generations. For more information, visit the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival website at www.saranaclakewintercarnival.com. The 2024 Winter Carnival will take place February 2-11, 2024.
